2019-2020 Pope band Auditions


​Incoming Freshman/New Members

Scale Requirements - Timed: 2 Minutes Maximum
• Major Scales and Arpeggios must be played.
           (https://www.gmea.org/symphonic-band-scales-etudes)
• Scales should be played in GMEA order (G-C-F-Bb-Eb-Ab-Db-Gb-B-E-A-D)
• All scales must be played at the same tempo, tongued ascending, and slurred descending

Etude Requirements (CLICK HERE FOR ETUDE)
 Source Material for Etude
  • Movement I: Libson from “Lincolnshire Posy” - Percy Grainger
  • A Song Without Words from “Second Suite in F” - Gustav Holst
  • Variations on a Korean Folksong - James Barnes Chance 

Sight-Reading
  • Students will receive a study period to learn a short 8-12 measure piece to the best of their ability.
  • After 30-seconds, the student will be asked to play the etude for the judge.

Middle School Percussion Requirements​ (Same as District Band Round 1)
Percussionist should be able to display the following:
  • Snare Drum: Middle School - Multiple Bounce Roll, Flam Accent, Drag (Ruff), and student’s choice. All rudiments to be played in an open-close-open rudimental presentation fashion, except for the Multiple Bounce Roll. The Multiple Bounce Roll should be played starting at a piano dynamic, crescendo to a forte dynamic, then decrescendo to a piano dynamic. Student’s Choice must be selected from the 40 Essential/Standard Rudiments. Student’s Choice must be selected from the 40 Essential/Standard Rudiments.
  • Keyboard Percussion: Chromatic scale, full range of instrument; major scales and arpeggios as noted below by grade level: (Middle School Scale Requirements: concert F, Bb, Eb, and Ab major, 2 octaves each, memorized, using the same rhythm pattern and tempo as required of middle school woodwind and brass scales/arpeggios.)

5:30 p.m. - Report to Pope HS Band Room 
6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. - Auditions/Pizza Dinner Provided
 

Returning Members

All Auditions will occur during your band class.
