Since December, we have repeatedly asked that parents and students check calendars and work out conflicts in advance. As we start Symphonic Camp, we have received the last minute array of excuses about why students can't attend. Several have been prefaced with "we didn't know about symphonic camp"...
We place events on the band calendar months in advance, send e-mail newsletters, announce in class, discuss at PBPA meetings, and hand out detailed flyers in class before each main event. We even send out "Remind" messages for many events. It is astounding that you couldn't know what's upcoming when it is communicated in so many ways.
Communication is a two way process...no matter how many methods we use and how many times we send, if you choose not to open, read, or hear it, you won't know what's happening. That isn't our fault.
Again, PLEASE read, open e-mails, attend meetings, etc. If it is on our calendar, it is important. Many events that involve guest clinicians are unique and can't be made up. You also can't work on ensemble skills by practicing by yourself. We have lots of after school activities scheduled in January, February, and March.
Sorry to be so direct, but when we spend SO much time communicating, then get accused of not giving out information, it is frustrating. We never wait until the last minute to post information unless some emergency forces a change. Please meet us halfway and receive communication!
