For our new members, let me take you through the first part of the school year:
Marching band is an extracurricular activity. There is no marching band class and we do not rehearse the marching routines during school. On Fridays, we do something we call "Fun Music Fridays" during which we will play the stands tunes, Friday Night Band music, and music for community performances and pep rallies. All students (including those only doing concert band) participate and can perform with us at the community events and pep rallies. This is a part of being in band...representing your school and community and spreading the "Pope spirit" through performance.
During band classes, we will mix fundamental training and development with concert preparation. For the 9th grade band class and percussion class, the early weeks will be more heavily weighted toward skill development and acclimation to high school band. All groups will perform on the Fall and Winter Concerts.
Your students will also have a series of class projects that they will complete for grades. These range from playing scales to watching and responding to videos of music performances. In October, we will hold auditions for 2nd semester band placement. All band classes during 2nd semester are ability-based.
We will also be encouraging participation in honor groups such as the district honor bands, all state bands, and area ensembles (AYWS, MYSO, AYB, etc). These are optional, but can be valuable experiences, especially when trying to secure future scholarships.
Finally, we encourage as many students as possible to enroll in private lessons. This is THE fastest way to develop skills, prepare for auditions, and move up in the program(s).
We will use a variety of resources for communication. The website is updated regularly, we have a "Pope Band App" available for your phone, we will use "Remind" message service, Twitter, e-mail blasts, and PBPA regular meetings in order to disseminate information. Check the band calendar regularly and please open and read e-mails. We can deliver the info, but you must be a willing recipient!
We look forward to another great year with many opportunities for musical growth!
