Next year, we are redesigining the Friday Night Marching Band experience to be a simple field routine and "fun" music. This band will ONLY practice on Fridays prior to games. The only commitment outside of Fridays will be a few rehearsals during band camp to learn the basic marching routine. That's it. This should make it easy for our non-competition members to have some type of marching experience without a major time commitment. We are encouraging all members to participate at this level as a minimum. We also know that there will be certain situations that make this impossible (i.e. a varsity football player or cheerleader can't do Friday Night Band). We will work with individuals to resolve other conflicts and get as many students as possible involved.
The competition marching band will function as always, except it will not perform at halftime of football games. We will do postgames or extra exhibition performances, and will pick a "feature Friday" in which we do the competition show at a game.
So what is the potantially harmful rumor? Some of our kids have apparently started spreading the word that if you don't do marching band, you can't sign up for band class. That is absolutely not true. An extra-curricular has no bearing on courses in the curriculum. While we want more students to have a marching band experience, we will not try to force anyone to do so if there are legitimate, unavoidable conflicts.
"Encouraging" everyone to participate and "requiring" everyone to participate are different things. PLEASE do not twist our words or add your own interpretations!
When in doubt....ask the band directors!!!!!!!
