Check out the new ad from Fred J Miller in the School Band and Orchestra magazine (national publication). Pope uniform right out front!
Congratulations to Mr. Gribble for his selection as a member of the American School Band Director's Association. The organization represents band programs from across the United States and promotes the band activity through events, awards, and mentoring activities. as follows:
"When the ASBDA was founded by Dale C. Harris and the other charter members who attended the organizing convention in November of 1953, the intent was to draw together some of the finest minds and best teachers nationally for the purpose of helping influence the direction and furthering the cause of good music in the nation's public schools. Therefore it was decided that prospective members must have taught at least seven years and their work was to be in every way exemplary. Furthermore, a candidate must be endorsed by the state in which he/she resides and in addition receive the overall endorsement of the association itself. In this way the collective thinking of the organization would have the common denominator of successful achievement.
ASBDA membership is recognition of a band director’s work as a music educator by other music educators and is therefore an honor reserved for the nation's greatest bandmasters."
Our newest approach to the Spring Concert was a big success. The "Cafe` Music Concert" brought a wide variety of music, flavored coffees, and an enormous selection of desserts together in the Pope cafeteria. All three concert bands performed, along with several chamber ensembles and the Pope Jazz Band. Our vision for this event is to expand the number of small ensembles, provide music ranging from standard concert band literature to pops music and movie/theater soundtracks...and to attempt bringing some of our middle school students into the evening. This could develop into a HUGE event...and we are depending on all of our Pope Band families to promote and to assist with this fun evening of food and music!
A side note: several of our parents were a bit disturbed by the change from the old "concert in the parking lot" format, even after we explained the rationale....on Monday, I was approached by Pope administration asking if we were outside on the parking lot or inside for the concert. When I replied "inside", they said, "Good...there's a baseball double header and we would need the parking lot...this way you won't have to move". Seems we
A huge word of thanks to all who worked so hard to make the band banquet a success! It was a great evening and we enjoyed good food and lots of recognitions for many of our students. One incredible fact that surfaced was the amount of scholarship monies accrued by our senior class. The senior band students amassed over $1.44 MILLION dollars in scholarships! That's correct...not the entire senior class of Pope...not all seniors in the fine arts...just the band seniors. It just goes to show that you can do band all four years and do well academically.
We had two amazing video presentations showcasing our year in review and the senior class. Thanks to Ms. Parker and Ms. DiGiovanni for their hard work preparing the videos. Congratulations to Gus Todd who received the "Leader of the Band" award, Josh Durr who received the "Louis Armstrong Jazz" award, and Mandy Wachtel, who received the "John Philip Sousa" award. All three are nationally recognized awards for excellence.
In looking back at our year, we have had a LOT of activity and success. We started out with a new look...brand new uniforms. We had a great marching season, strong performances at our LGPE evaluations, a fantastic jazz band festival performance, another circuit championship and a top ten world championship performance from winter guard, the resurgence of our percussion ensembles, great Fall and Winter concerts and Bailey Showcase, and numerous individual student honors for district band, all state, and community groups. We had our first ever student sin the Army All American Band and the Bands of America National Honors band. X-PLOSION! was a rousing success, and we were very visible in the community with performances in the East Cobber Parade, Sunrise Assisted Living, Shop With a Greyhound, All State Insurance Conference, Merchant's Walk Holiday celebration, and a wedding proposal!
Spread the word...the Pope Band Program is gearing up for an even better 2013-2014 and we need YOU. Students...get involved in as many of our activities as possible...the more connected and active you are, the more fun you have. Parents...we need your support with many different areas of supervision, physical support, and financial activity/fundraising. If we want the great activities and accomplaishments to continue, we must have involvement from the families in the program!
Congratulations to the Pope Jazz Band on their fantastic performance at the GMEA Festival this past Friday evening. The group played really well and were a big hit with the audience and evaluators alike. The group received all superior ratings (straight "A"s) from the three person evaluation panel.
Special thanks to Mr. Ray Durr for his guidance and expertise in preparing the students for this performance (and their others throughout the year). We are SO fortunate to have this excellent educator/performer working with our students. Even in the face of his personal health issues, he came through and helped the students have a great experience! Thanks, Ray!!!!
Join us on Tuesday for the concert with coffee and dessert in the Pope cafeteria...you can hear the jazz band along with many other groups playing some really fun and enjoyable musical selections while you indulge your sweet tooth!
