This is the equivalent of reaching high school not able to read or do basic math computations. Scales form the basis for all music, and playing in the various keys is critical to continued success. The really frightening issue were the students who came in, stated "I don't know this" and didn't even try. (Mind you...we gave out the information on these projects on the first day of school...posted it on the website, AND have played the scales due for today's project in class every day for two weeks.)
Please do not panic when you see these project grades...rather...take a few minutes to work with your student to establish some practice time at home or to express to them the need to come in before school, during AO periods, during lunch periods, or after school to practice. As with any other subject, it takes time to memorize, calculate, or develop the physical skills to perform the material.
The projects make up a significant portion of your student's grade and we do not want to see anyone lowered a letter grade or more for not taking the time to prepare these basic, fundamental components of playing an instrument. We also have private teachers available for one-on-one lessons after school. Sign up under the Conservatory link on this website.
Looking forward to
