Unfortunately, some who choose magnet/IB are not able to schedule band after a couple of semesters. According to their IB coordinators, Campbell does a "split block" in which the kids get 45 minutes of band...and it might just be every other day. After a few semesters, the schedule conflicts increase and they are now "looking for a scheduling alternative" to help keep kids in music...but it isn't in place currently.
Our Wheeler friends (my old alma mater) also experience schedule conflicts as magnet schedules reach junior and senior years. It seems that the specific nature of many of the specialized classes makes them singletons or puts them in the same periods as music classes. You have to be very creative in scheduling in order to continue music for four years.
We have outstanding academics at Pope, as well as a wonderful music program... why not experience both? We have numerous opportunities to be in different ensembles, travel, perform at prestigious venues, and meet professional players and conductors on a regular basis. These opportunities do not always exist in other schools....particularly if you are conflicted out of band!
Talk to your friends and neighbors who have students in the 8th grade band programs and let them know how much you want their student to have a great musical experience as a part of high school. The memories last a lifetime, and you only get one chance to experience them!
