For band classes, we have completed 2 semester projects, and have another this week. The Fall Concert is only weeks away, and District Honor Band/All State signups are due immediately.
The Band Boosters have started their fundraising efforts...with a HUGE success in the Recycling fundraiser (details will be under the booster link).
WHEW! Seems like things are just moving at the speed of light.
On Saturday, we had our only "All Day Rehearsal" for competition band. Many of our neighbors schedule 3-4 of these...we just do the one. It was a big day and lots got accomplished. Many thanks to Will Grimes, Andrew Cole, and Kari White for volunteering to assist in music and marching rehearsals. With our budget cuts, we haven't been able to employ as many staff, so the extra eyes and ears were much appreciated!
Of course, our full time staff did a magnificent job and the students really worked hard all day...right up until the weather made our day shorter than planned! One extra note: Our backfield drum major who runs the Dr Beat metronome during practice was absent, and two of the band moms stepped in and ran the metronome during practice! Thanks Mrs Warbington and Mrs Brewer...you were great! Also, we need to thank Mrs Neja and her unofficial committee that fed the staff lunch. They donated food and set everything up so that the staff could have a relaxed (and delicious) lunch during the break. The equipment team also spent the day building props in preparation for their unveiling. Quite the crew of engineers and contractors!
As we look ahead, please understand that the next month and a half are the busiest of our year. Once we exit football season, things slow down a bit. Also, please understand that progress reports and the first sets of grades come home soon. It is not unusual for our 9th graders to experience "high school shock" if their grades are lower than they typically were in middle school. No reason to panic...it's normal...BUT...students need to plan, meet deadlines, and turn in assignments. We can not use band as a punishment and pull students out of rehearsals and performances due to grades. This negatively impacts the other students and the performance quality. Students across the country participate in band and get good grades. Please devise a plan that limits social media, cell phones, "hanging out with friends", TV, video gaming, etc. rather than eliminating band rehearsal as a remedy.
Thanks for the support for everything that is happening. We hope to see you at the Fall Concert...it's going to be quite special as we combine with the 8th grade bands from Hightower Trail...don't miss the extravaganza at the end of the evening! It is a first for us and should be quite memorable.
