First, there are band placement auditions for second semester here at Pope. Students will try out for placement in one of three symphonic bands of mixed grade levels. These occur mid-October.
Second, there are District Honor Band and All State tryouts. These occur early December.
The materials for both auditions are the same. Scales (from the GMEA Scale Sheets), and a prepared etude (also from the GMEA materials). For both the Pope auditions and the Honor Band/All State auditions, we play the first (lyric) etude only.
For the Pope tryouts, we encourage students to attempt all 12 major scales with arpeggios. These are the "alphabet" of playing your instrument, so everyone benefits from knowing them. For the District/All State tryout, 9th and 10th graders only play 8 of the scales.
Links to the scale sheets and etudes are on the Pope Band Website under the "Resources" link.
IMPORTANT: The Pope Band tryout also counts as a significant portion of your student's semester grade. Those who come in and only play a portion of the required material will see the results in a lower overall band grade for the semester. PLease encourage advance preparation of ALL the materials!
